Description
Very rare and wonderful, original, ca1910 Cast Iron “Happy Hooligan” Nodder Phaeton style Carriage Toy manufactured by Kenton Hardware Co. This early, cast iron Comic Character Carriage measures 10” long overall and 8 1/2" tall (to the top of the “nodder” head of the separately cast Happy Hooligan driver) by 3 1/4" wide. The Toy features a rare, original Cast Iron Bobble Head Newspaper Comic Strip / Character figure of Happy Hooligan seated on a phaeton type carriage which is pulled by a trotting horse.Happy Hooligan was a popular and influential early American comic strip, the first major strip by the already celebrated cartoonist Frederick Burr Opper. It debuted with a Sunday strip on March 11, 1900 in the William Randolph Hearst newspapers, and was one of the first popular comics with King Features Syndicate.
The figure of Happy Hooligan is oversized (as were all of the "nodder" figures from this series of Kenton Cast Iron Toys) and his head is even more oversized than his body. The head is separately cast and pivots on a post creating the “nodding” effect we are so used to seeing with later sports and character “Bobble Heads”. The horse and carriage are integrally cast while Happy Hooligan’s body, neck and head are all separately cast.
This wonderful and whimsical, ca1910 Kenton Happy Hooligan, Cast Iron Nodder Carriage is in very good condition. It is 100% original and has never been repainted, touched-up, or restored. The horse and carriage retain approx. 90% of their original surface paint. The body of Happy Hooligan also retains approx. 90% of its original surface paint while his head retains approx. 75% of its surface paint (see the scans below). There are no crack, breaks, chips, repairs or physical damage of any kind to the cast iron.
A very rare and charming, ca1910 Cast Iron, Kenton Hardware Co. Nodder Phaeton style Carriage Toy and a fantastic addition to any Collection!!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
