    Description

Fifty Years of Football at Syracuse University 1889-1939, Arthur L. Evans, Syracuse University Football History Committee, Norwood Massachusetts, 1939, large cloth, 277 pages. Wonderful history about Syracuse on the gridiron. Year by year reviews, accounts of the most memorable games and reminiscences of players from the past, numerous photos, lettermen's list, the series against Colgate, all is very well done. Other gridiron highlights include games against Nebraska, Michigan, Montana, Oregon Aggies, Carlisle Indians (with Jim Thorpe and Pop Warner). Great details on the 1915 team with an interior line averaging "a then un-heard of" 222 pounds, their shellacking of Colgate, and their trip west to play Montana, Oregon Aggies and Occidental. Long before the era of Jim Brown and Ernie Davis, Syracuse Football had Buck O'Neill, Vic Hanson, Pappy Waldorf, Duffy Daugherty, Ossie Solem, Bill Horr, Marty Glickman, Chick Meehan, Wilmeth Sidat-Singh, Ray Barbuti and Chris Schlachter. Indeed, an important HIGHLY RECOMMENDED piece of College Football history.
